BJJ Classes:

BJJ classes offer a great degree of variability where no two classes are ever the same. This is primarily due to the wide variety of techniques introduced in each class but also due to the fact that partners are alternated every few minutes in the class. Due to the variety of skill levels, from students who have just commenced training to those who have been training for over 5 years, there is always a different experience guaranteed.

Every class commences with a warm up and stretch, ensuring the body is prepared for the demands of BJJ. The class is then opened to the rest of the class, allowing students to ask questions and any particular techniques or concepts they are unsure of. A series of drills relating to this query are then constructed and the class is taken through this. This means that any misunderstandings are cleared up at the beginning of class and students can spend the remainder of the class trying to reinforce what is taught by the instructor. Depending if there are further questions, the instructor will then direct the remainder of the class around particular areas they feel need to be developed by students. The remainder of the class is focused on free ‘rolling’, the BJJ version of light sparring. This style of controlled training allows students to engage with one another and try and implement the techniques taught into their own style. This style of training has been seen to be the most effective in producing proficient BJJ students, rather then just drilling techniques repetitively and not looking at its application to each individual student.

The demands of BJJ place great strain on the body, causing the body to become stronger, conditioned and fitter. This allows a style of martial arts that is extremely versatile and excellent for self defence to also become a great overall workout.
